THE CENTER HILL LAKE HOUSE
Starting with a view...
Like so many of our custom homes, this one begins with a great view.
Although physically disconnected from the water this site provides great visual connections to the surrounding hills and lake. While the views during the summer are predominantly south and west during the winter the northern views open up with the loss of vegetation. The Center Hill Lake House uses horizontal planes to signify the man-made manipulation of the hillside. The vertical elements, relating to the surrounding cliffs create a direct connection between the artificial building and the natural landscape by invading the building and piercing the horizontal elements. Together this vertical and horizontal geometry extends out into the landscaping and transitions from rigid to organic as the space transitions from interior to exterior focus.

Site slope and limited space creates some interesting challenges. Teaming up with the surveyors our team used their site survey to diagram and evaluate the site's potential given these constraints. How do we fit the house, pool, and great exterior space on this site?
Privacy should be considered given the close proximity to the neighbors. Lets plan for more solid spaces near neighbors and more open spaces toward the lake.
Trees and Vegetation offer an escape from the urban life and contribute to the outdoor life at the lake. Removing selective trees and creating spaces for outdoor gathering, walking and camping. How do we preserve the vegetation while bringing more light and view to the home? How do we enhance the exterior experience and blend the architecture with the landscaping?
Adjusting the Concept
The concept evolved into thinking of horizontal planes as a man-made manipulation of the hillside eventually creating patios, decks, and roof shapes of the building connecting inside and out. The vertical elements, relating to the surrounding cliffs would create a direct connection between the artificial building and the natural landscape by invading the building and piercing the horizontal elements. This horizontal geometry extends out into the landscaping and transitions from orthogonal to diagonal as space gets closer to the lake and erodes from hardscape to soft-scape. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright this horizontal emphasis began to make connections to mid-century forms and "prairie" related geometry known for its "organic approach to creating architecture."
BIM Modeling
Once the draft schematic design is established our team moves into BIM Modeling. Find out more about what BIM is here. BIM gets us one step closer to construction drawings and is better suited for us and our engineering team to design for project constructability and budgeting. BIM offers us with greater accuracy and gives us on-site cloud sync technology to provide our contractors with accurate 3D model representation while they build.
